When the San Mateo County Division of First American Title Company was originated, it was one of the first title companies in the county. The origins are traced back through family legend to 1874, when George H. Rice, a San Mateo County pioneer, lumberman and landowner, served as county recorder and prepared abstracts of title as a sideline.
